We've laid out the perfect itinerary for you including stops on this 6-day 5-night Ex Brisbane – Toowoomba – Granite Belt – Gold Coast or Brisbane road trip
Day 1:
Starting your road trip from Brisbane travel no more than 1.5 hours to Porters Plainland Hotel for lunch from 11am stopping for 45 minutes at this country pub run by Porters for 75 years. Drive 1 hour to historic Spring Bluff Train Station and enjoy the gardens and a magical 545m loop Grade 3 walk.
Drive 15 minutes to Peacehaven Botanic Park, Highfields. Walk amongst 400 beautifully presented native plants and trees.
Drive via Highfields Road to collect supplies enroute Kiambram Country Cottages 15 minutes away.
Dine at Meringandan Pub (7 Days) or stay home, take in a sunset from Kiambram Guests personal sunset lookout and self-cater. A firepit at the cabin on cool evenings.
Day 2:
Drive 1 hour 20 minutes via Goombungee and Maclagan to the Bunya Mountains. Spend a few hours in the largest stand of ancient Bunya Pines in the world, an old and beautiful national park, a place of iconic ancient cultural significance being cared for by indigenous rangers.
Head back via Cooyar 1.25 hours to Crows Nest for lunch and shopping in the restored Nolan’s Block (Thurs-Sun various hours from 9am to 4pm) home to French Bistro Myrtille, Patisserie My Little Blueberry and a collective of gifts, food, clothing, homewares and antique shops.
Reservations are necessary at Myrtille.
Stop by Centenary Park in the middle of town to see the Jimmy Crow tree and Bullocky’s Rest on
the Toowoomba Road for some more history. Crows Nest Sofdrinks (since 1903) in the main street are worth a browse Weekdays and Sat (9am – 2pm).
Pechey Distillery is just 10 minutes down the road and open to the public Sat (2.30-5pm) Sun (10am – 2pm).
Driving under 30 minutes home to Kiambram you could stop off at Clock & Bull Brewhouse in Cabarlah (lunch dinner and drinks Wed - Sunday 11am - 9.30pm) or dine at Rosalie House Cellar Door Restaurant (Thurs – Sun lunch) (Sat-Sun dinner) with the option of adding a Dine in the Vines Experience.
Day 3: From Kiambram drive 20 minutes to the Queensland Museum network’s Cobb+Co Museum situated by Queens Park open 7 Days (9.30am – 4pm) Spend 1 hour including refreshments.
Drive through Toowoomba to Allora on the New England Highway 45 minutes.
Drive into the village and past the Mary Poppins House, back onto the highway and 15 minutes to Glengallan Homestead and Heritage Centre (open Wed – Sun 10am to 4pm):
1 hour stop for a self-guided tour and refreshments at the onsite café.
Drive 1 hour to the Granite Belt checking into 31 The Rocks cabin accommodation in Stanthorpe. Self cater or dine at Annas or Vino Granito inspired by the local Italian heritage.
Day 4:
Add a self-guided e-bike day tour through nearby wineries to your accommodation package; includes a locally sourced gourmet lunch platter at a selected winery. Return transport for you and your purchases, from the end of your bicycle tour back to your Villa. Alternatively book a private or group food and wine tour with Filippos Stanthorpe Tours.
Day 5:
Drive 45 minutes down the New England to Tenterfield. Stop 2.5 hours. Visit the heritage listed Tenterfield Saddler Museum (open Tues – Sun 9am to 12pm). Enjoy morning tea at one of several cafes. Visit Sir Henry Parkes School of Arts Museum (open 7 Days 10am to 4pm) before heading back 20 minutes to Queensland for lunch at Balancing Heart Vineyard (open 7 Days for lunch ) Stop 1 hour.
Drive on 10 minutes to Girraween National Park full of spectacular rugged scenery with epic rock formations. If heading back the 30 minutes to Stanthorpe before 4pm Friday to Monday be sure to stop in at the Heavenly Chocolate shop. Pick up supplies to have a quiet night in.
Day 6:
Return 45 minutes through the Rose and Rodeo City, Warwick enjoying the beautiful sandstone architecture and morning tea in the CBD. Visit the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre. Stop 1 hour.
Drive 30 minutes via Cunningham Highway stopping at the Crest Carpark of Main
Range National Park at Cunningham’s Gap. Allow a 30 minute stop for the shortest grade 3 bushwalk which is also a very beautiful one through rainforest with rewarding views over the Fassifern Valley and Lake Moogerah. Drive on via Beaudesert and Canungra 2 hours to the Gold Coast.
Alternatively head straight back to Brisbane 1.5 hours. Take time to stop at Aratula Bakery at the bottom of Cunningham’s Gap range.
